your EQ doesn't know what key you're in.

KEYCOMB lands up to 64 narrow bells on the notes of your key and moves them with one fader. boost — the mix leans into the key. cut — the key gets carved out. flip INVERSE and the space between the notes moves instead.

the shape of a key

one fader. the whole key.

this is the comb — every bell on a note of the scale, riding one fader through time. the space between the notes stays untouched. until you invert it.

PLACEMENT ENGINE — LIVE KEY A MINOR

how to read it: each spire is one note of the current key · the ridge is the comb's EQ curve, sliding back through time as the fader moves · it walks the circle of fifths, and every fourth key it flips INVERSE

what it actually does

a comb, not a curve.

an ordinary EQ moves regions. KEYCOMB moves notes.

01 · THE GRID

64 BELLS

every note of your key and scale gets its own narrow bell, from sub to air. one fader, ±24 dB, moves all of them. that's the whole interface.

02 · INVERSE

THE SPACE BETWEEN

flip it and the bells land on everything that isn't the key. carve the out-of-key mud without touching a single note you meant to play.

03 · MIDI FOLLOW

CHORD FOLLOW

hold a chord on a MIDI track and the whole grid retunes to it, gliding. your EQ follows the song now.

04 · Q → 200

PLAYABLE RESONATOR

crank Q until boosted notes ring like strings. automate SHIFT in semitones and play the comb like an instrument. DECAY says how long it sustains.

under the hood.

an EQ where the filters already know what key you're in.

🎹

one fader, the whole key

up to 64 narrow bells land on the notes of the key and scale you pick. GAIN (±24 dB) moves them all — boost leans the mix into the key, cut carves the key out.

🔄

INVERSE

same fader, opposite target: the space between the notes moves instead of the notes. everything that isn't the key, in one gesture.

🎼

MIDI FOLLOW

hold notes or a chord on a MIDI track and the comb retunes to them, live. the grid follows the song instead of a setting.

📐

matched filters

vicanek matched peaking filters keep their bell shape near nyquist without oversampling. narrow stays narrow, even at the top.

🔀

click-free key changes

dual filter banks with an equal-power crossfade, so switching key or scale never clicks. GLIDE sets how long the morph takes.

🟢

draggable dots

every filter is a dot. drag to offset one note, alt-drag for its width, double-click to reset, box-select on empty space to move a group together.

the knobs

every control, in plain words.

the tooltips inside the plugin say the same thing. hover over anything.

the comb

where the dots go

placement: which notes get filters, and how the grid moves as a whole.

GAIN±24 dB on every band at once — the hero fader
SHIFTslides all dots in semitones. automatable — play the comb
TAPERthins the high end toward chord tones the higher you go
GLIDEhow long grid changes take to morph, 30–200 ms

✓ 14 factory presets cover the obvious starting points

the ring

how the dots behave

behaviour: width, sustain, and when the bands are allowed to move.

Q40 at noon, up to 200 — boosted notes ring like a playable resonator
DECAYcaps how long rings sustain after the input stops. MAX = natural
DYNAMICSbands move only while their note is actually playing
TILTweights the master gain toward the lows or the highs

✓ SOLO hears only what the plugin adds; SOLO REMOVED hears only what it takes away

formats

same engine, both formats.

faq.

does it work in my DAW?+
AU for logic pro and garageband, VST3 for ableton live, fl studio, cubase, reaper and anything else that scans VST3. it's built and tested first-class in ableton live and logic pro. mac only for now.
what are the dots?+
each dot is one filter sitting on one note. drag it up or down to offset just that note, hold alt and drag for just that note's width, double-click to reset it. drag a box on empty space to select several — then they move, widen and reset as a group.
how do i route MIDI into it?+
turn on MIDI FOLLOW, hold notes or a chord on a MIDI track pointed at KEYCOMB, and the comb retunes to what you're holding. the routing differs per DAW — click the ? next to the presets menu inside the plugin and it walks you through the exact steps for ableton live, logic pro, fl studio, cubase and reaper.
can i play it live?+
yes. push Q toward 200 and boosted notes ring like a playable resonator — hold chords with MIDI FOLLOW or automate SHIFT and the comb becomes an instrument. DECAY keeps the ring-out from swallowing the mix, and DYNAMICS makes bands move only while their note is actually sounding.
is it signed?+
yes — signed and notarized with an apple developer ID, so the installer opens clean with no security warning. an uninstaller is included, and it lists every file it deletes.
windows?+
soon is the honest answer. a windows VST3 build is being worked on and there's no date to promise yet — today KEYCOMB is mac only, apple silicon and intel.
refunds and updates?+
updates within 1.x are free — your lemon squeezy receipt always downloads the latest build. if KEYCOMB won't run on your system, email contact@boomerhotel.com and we'll fix it or refund it.
